“Oh my God,” Kath gasped. “What are we going to do? They’ll kill us when they see we’re trying to escape! They’ll kill us. They’re gonna kill us!”

“Not if we kill them first,” Anna growled, curling her hands into fists and clenching her jaw.

“Impossible,” Caitlin said, shaking her head.

“There’s four of us and two of them,” Anna said defiantly. “You saw my Muay Thai kicks, girl. You know I can throw down.”

“This isn’t some Hollywood action movie,” Caitlin countered. “Those men are both much bigger and stronger than any of us, and, what’s more, they’ve got weapons on them, guns and knives. I don’t mean to sound like a total bitch, Anna, but I don’t care how good your martial arts skills are. It’d be suicide to try to fight those guys.”

“If we all bum-rush ‘em—” Anna began, but already the aggressive rage was dimming in her eyes and faltering in her heart.

“It won’t work,” Caitlin said stubbornly. “It’ll only get us hurt or killed. If we had weapons, it’d be a different story, then we’d have a chance…but we don’t, and physically, we’re no match for them. I hate to say it, but it’s the cold, hard truth.”

“Well, what are we going to do?” Kath cried, her voice almost cracking and breaking into a scream. “They’re coming up the stairs right now! We have to do something!”

“We can’t do anything right now,” Caitlin said, trying to control her racing mind, which was threatening to careen out of control as cold fear and icy panic began to surge through her.

“Guys, guys, they’re almost here,” Gina whimpered, tears filling her eyes as she pressed her ear against the door. Not only her hands but indeed her entire body was trembling with fear.

“Put the duct tape back on your mouths,” Caitlin said, “and hook the broken zip ties back around your ankles. Hurry! Sit in roughly the same places we were all in before and keep your backs against the wall. If we can fool them into thinking we’re still tied up, they’ll probably leave again, and hopefully, next time, they’ll be gone long enough to actually give us enough time to escape.”

There was nothing else the women could do at this point, so they each grabbed a strip of duct tape, stuck it over their mouths, then hurriedly got back into the same places they’d been sitting in previously, hooking the broken zip ties around their ankles to make it look like they were still restrained.

The last of them, Gina, had only barely managed to get into position when they heard the ominous sound of a key turning in the lock. But just as the door handle began to turn, Caitlin noticed something that almost gave her a heart attack and which sent blasts of terror and panic so cold and so dread-inducing through her core that it almost paralyzed her: sitting on the middle of the floor, only a foot or two away from the camping lantern, glaringly bright in its hue of red, was a broken zip tie, one of those that had been used to bind the women’s wrists.
